Dr. Wale Okediran



Honorable Dr. Wale Okediran has been a public servant for the Nigerian government for almost 30 years while simultaneously developing a breadth of experience contributing to advocacy, regional dialogue, and policy development leading to improvements in health across the region.

As a Member of the Federal House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007, he was an active member of the Health Committee during which he was involved in the drafting and passage of the National Health Bill. He was also on the National Assembly team that participated in advocacy tours to five Nigerian Northern States where there was resistance to the Polio Eradication Exercise in 2006 and 2007. He has also worked extensively in the area of Environment especially, Climate Change. In this position, he was a Board Member of the e-Parliament where he participated in several International conferences and presented several papers on issues of Sustainable Energy and Climate Change.

As a Legislator, he was also a conferee on several important Bills including the National Agency for the Prevention and control of HIV/AIDS (NACA) Bill, the National Health Insurance Scheme Bill,The Sustainable Energy Act as well as sponsoring the Act to establish the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria Bill.  Dr. Okediran has provided oversight of the Teaching Hospitals, the Federal Medical Centers, and The National Health Insurance Scheme activities on behalf of the Federal House of Representatives, and has a firm grasp on the importance of good governance in planning and allocating funding for activities.

Between the years 2008-2009, DrOkediran was involved in the Action for West Africa Region (AWARE) HIV/AIDS project, where he was instrumental in helping to develop the HIV/AIDS Model Law and moving the policy process forward through advocacy with national governments in The Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia.

He has consulted for several International and Local Development Agencies such asConstella Futures International USA, National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, USIS, UNAIDS, NPHCDA, NACA, UNICEF, Health Reform Foundation of Nigeria, Action Aid among several others.

His educational qualifications include BSc (Hons) 1977, MB, ChB 1980 (University of Ife now ObafemiAwolowo University),  Fellow of General Medical Practitioners of Nigeria and Fellow of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria.

In view of his prowess in the field of Sports where he variously represented his University and Oyo State, Dr Okediran was awarded a University Scholarship for Sports between 1977 and 1980 at the then University Of Ife.

Together with a few friends, Dr Okediran in 2010 established the first Writers Residency in Nigeria, THE EBEDI INTERNATIONAL WRITERS RESIDENCY in Iseyin, Oyo State, an initiative for the use of writers from all over the world.

An award winning author, Okediran’s highly acclaimed novel, TENANTS OF THE HOUSE which is a fictional account of his years in the House of Representatives was the 2011 Co Winner of the Wole Soyinka Prize for African Literature and is currently on the reading list of many Nigerian Universities. The US edition of the book was launched in Atlanta Georgia in April 2012.

His latest book, FEARLESS; THE EMERGENCE OF A VIRILE AND FORMIDABLE OPPOSITION LEADER which is the political memoir of Hon Femi Gbajabiamila was published in July 2012.

Okediran who was the National President of the Association of Nigerian Authors between 2006 and 2009 currently runs an Abuja based Consultancy Service whose clients include The National Assembly Abuja, the National Primary Health Development Agency Abuja and The Nigerian Governors Forum among others.
